Re. Simpsons. Those who live or lived in Oregon and are Simpsons fans know Springfield is for Springfield Oregon the blue collar, across-the-freeway town from haughty Eugene. Characters names reflect many Portland Street names such as Ned Flanders and Flander St. in Portland. The mountain in the Simpsons resembles Mt. Hood which is pretty much visible from several parts of Portland and the Nuclear Plant could well be the now closed Trojan Plant on the Columbia river about 30 miles north of Portland. Groening is (was) a Portland resident if memory serves me correctly. Alas, while the Simpson’s can be identified with by the blue collar folks there are fewer and fewer of them in Portland which is about as liberal as a town can get. I moved out 15 years ago to the wilds of rural SW Washington to get away from the stifling and boringly predictable uber lib atmosphere.
