1st Belly Tank Back @ Bonneville '09
10 08 09 - 23:19 I can't think of a better tribute to Bill Burke that what Geoff Hacker has done this year. Geof found another of the same old 165 gallon tank & decided to recreate the car that Burke ran in 1946.Bill Burke was a man WAAAAY ahead of his time, he was a man with vision.
Burke was the guy that saw the potential in taking a surplus WW2 fuel pod to the salt. He wanted to beat guys like Stu Hilborn, who already held several records.
Burke was clever when he decided to capitalize on all of the aerodymanic work that Gov't scientists had done on these belly tanks.
Bill was a true competitor when he stuffed a Model T frame & a hopped-up flathead inside of that tank.
Bill had brass balls when he hopped on the bicycle seat that was welded to the torque tube & ran over 137mph, without a windshield, a roll bar, or seat belts!
This week, Bill's spark & his competitive drive is shared by the many men & women who make the annual pilgrimage out to the salt. More info on Bonneville 2009
